Advance Information and Expression of Interest


In March 2017, the Department of Visual Art, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), University of Johannesburg (UJ) will host a major exhibition of international artists' books from the Jack Ginsberg Collection of Artists' Books to be held at the UJ Art Gallery. In association with this exhibition, the Department will also host an exhibition of South African book arts, book design and digital bookwork at The FADA Gallery as well as a colloquium on the book arts in South Africa at the FADA Building, Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

Keynote speakers at the colloquium and exhibitions are:

  • Sarah Bodman, Senior Research Fellow for Artists' Books and Programme Leader for MA Multi-disciplinary Printmaking at the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK   
  • Robbin Ami Silverberg, artist & founding director of Dobbin Mill hand-papermaking studio and Dobbin Books collaborative artist book studio in Brooklyn, NY. Silverberg is also Associate Professor at the Pratt Institute

This Advance Notice affords an opportunity to prepare and produce new work for consideration for the FADA Exhibition and/or paper presentations at the colloquium. A formal call for artworks and papers will be made later this year.
