The sixteen attached colour plates are largely annotated with just colour references.

On the title page:

Matisse paints a shadowless world - no shadows - flat lighting always.

By leaving out the shadows he removes the art to an unread one this is completed objectively - or primitively for the prehistoric artists omitted shows & accepted flat lighting.

Maud Sumner stated once, when I was speaking to her, that she painted her way best when she was utterly bored with painting & subject, & THE THING JAST CAME. This method presupposes great riches stored in the subconscious which come to the top & overflow when the conscious is not out to protrude itself.
