This version is printed on encyclopaedia paper.

Black solander box with the artist's name and the title in an inlaid label on the top cover. The box contains:

1. a thick black board with the artist's name and the title in an inlaid label.

2. title page on plain paper with the artist's name and the title.

3. a diagram showing how the 110 printed sheets are to be assembled for display.

4. a colophon page:

The drawing for Learning the Flute was executed by William Kentridge with black ink on clear acetate. This work was then cut into 110 pieces and contacted to negative film, which was exposed onto polymer letterpress printing plates. Each panel is printed onto an actual page of the Chambers' Enclyclopaedia from 1950. Two sets of encyclopaedias have been used for this edition. The chine collé encyclopaedia pages are supported by Arches white 250 gsm paper.

Printed in an edition of 18 impressions, with numbers 1/18 to 9/18 being printed on the Chambers' Encyclopaedia and numbers 10/18 to 18/18 on white Arches Johannot paper, 240 gsm.

Learning the Flute (reverse) is a hand printed photo lithographic negative and mirror reading edition made from the same drawing. It too, is printed in an edition of 18 impressions with numbers 1/18 to 9/18 being printed on the Chambers' Encyclopaedia and numbers 10/18 to 18/18 on white Arches Johannot paper, 240 gsm.

This print is intended to be mounted for display using push-pins. Ther is a 10 mm overlap on the bottom and right-hand edge of each panel. Each panel is numbered, beginning with 1 in the top left hand corner, and finishing with 110 in the bottom right hand corner. There are 10 rows across and 11 rows down.

Signed and numbered on this colophon and panel 110.
