This is an original page, or leaf, from a medieval Book of Hours, a book with prayers for private devotions. It was written and decorated by hand.

In Latin, on vellum. France, Possibly central.

Lettere bartarde script in light brown ink, ruled in red, written in a double column of 22 lines with rubrics in red. Calligraphic versal initials in liquid gold on brown tempera ground. One-quarter panel border of flowers, ivy leaves, gold dots. Note charming use of ascenders in script. Test (sic Text) is from a prayer to the Virgin; '. . . de Notre Dame. . . '
