The cover title is written in Battiss's large cursive script to cover the page. It, together with the enclosed map, has been damaged by water. The pages have been grommeted in the following order: Two preliminary pages First: Capt Elton and Second: Distances, followed by numbered pages: 1 (unnumbered), 5, 2, 6, 3, 7, 4, 8-17. The map (which was grommeted before page 1 has come loose) is illustrated over two pages and is titled: Enlarged Portion of Map of Captain Frederick ELTON'S journey 1870. The back cover has a pencil drawing of Njelele freshwater crayfish.
