During Battiss's trip to Marquesas, he met a child called Philippe who taught him Marquesan and whom Battiss taught English. See GB/30173 for the Primer which resulted.

These are the notes and illustrations used for the tuition and ideas for the Primer. There appeared to be a shortage of paper as even Air Polynesie check-in slips were re-used. Some of the images were used in the Primer, almost exactly as they appear. Most pages used are his pre-printed French lessons, signed by Philippe where Battiss has annotated the back of the pages.
