Reference note:
Extract from "Unisa 1968" p22:

When Professor Battiss became Head of the Fine Arts Department at the end of 1964, one of his main ambitions was to publish, through the University, an art magazine of high aesthetic and scholarly standard. The handsome pilot issue of De Arte appeared in 1965, but unfortunately the costs of such a publication proved far too high. De Arte, it seemed, had died. But in 1967 it humbly, perhaps even timorously, came to the scene once again in a more simple form. . . . Readers have been tolerant, some have been enthusiastic, and there are even some who have proved their faith in the publication by giving valuable help. These include our sponsors and advertisers, but also writers, photographers and editorial advisers.

De Arte is the only magazine of its kind in this country published by an art school. Its future function, character and appearance are at present still somewhat vague. Will it in time perhaps become the South African Burlington Magazine? Possibly this is an unrealistic ideal, yet the aim of De Arte is to provide a platform for art scholars in South Africa. It is perhaps inevitable that it will be somewhat esoteric, but it is hoped that De Arte will contain material valuable for the South African art historian. And we, the editors, try always to make it readable and entertaining. F. Harmsen.
