Pencil and ink drawings used in "Limpopo", 1965 by Walter Battiss.

The titles appearing on the drawings were not used in the publication.

1. page 16. View from the ancient walled hill. Brodie Hill. 10.7.52. [Brodie Hill is a farm and is located in Capricorn District Municipality, Limpopo]. The verso has a drawing of lambs with the comment "Native Chief is Rampoer at Brodie Hill".

2. page 19. View from camp at [cancelled place-name which appears to be "Praia Bilene"] Praia S. Marthino. [San Martinho Beach Club - Praia do Bilene Hotels is located in Bilene, just north of Maputo]. P.E.A. [Portuguese East Africa]. 16.12.53. This delightful drawing was apparently too good not to be used for "Limpopo" and is dated fifteen months later than the other drawings!

3. page 21. Beit Bridge (colours: pink & cobalt) 28.9.52. [The verso has the comment "About 8 or 10 years ago. Mrs Thompson walked down to the Pafuri (Pafuri Limpopo river crossing) all alone with her children (2 or 3 girls) eating raisins & tiger-oats. Says Murray "She is the only authority on the Limpopo River"].

4. page 22. Messina. 2.10.52. Although the drawing is black pen and ink on white paper, the illustration has been reversed to be white ink on black paper.

5. Limpopo Banks. 13 July 52. This additional drawing was found with those above but not included in the publication.

6. page 8 &9. Road near Jagersfontein Upper Karoo. This drawing is in the collection of WAM, part of the Walter Battiss donation by Jack Ginsberg in 2016. See: Walter Battiss: "I Invented Myself", Ref: 1965.03, Page 70. ART 1577.
