Takapoto is an atoll in the Tuamotu group in French Polynesia, midway between Australia and Peru in the South Pacific. It must be one of the most remote places on earth.

Battiss kept a small journal on squared paper in which he illustrated and wrote of his experience.

The cover is torn and annotated.

The Island Speaks, 2pp:

1. Expect nothing at all times & you will be rewarded generously.

2. Take no money from friends and help all freely.

3. Speak gently and put others at their ease.

4. Be up early to see the White Pearl rise and shine over he lagoon.

5. At night make music, dance & love.

6. Injure not the dogs & pigs. Let them roam freely.

7. Lust not after the young men who work with boats on the sea.

8. Lust not after young me who work [?] coconuts on the land.

9. Tell a yahine she is pretty. She will already know tub likes you to confirm it.

10. Cook the fish & rice so that a man desires more of it.

11. Let the grandchildren do small labours for the elders.

12. If a machine comes your way use it properly.

13. Learn how to repair all things, big & small.
