BA/ Neg. The number on the card or the Photographic Negative number, where it exists.

Giles #. The number identifying the number of the work originally owned by Giles Battiss.

Title in books. From monographs (including page number): JG- "Walter Battiss: I Invented Myself" (colour coded yellow) or GA- "Walter Battiss, Gentle Anarchist" (blue) or both (pink). In order to maintain the integrity of the original numbering, some paintings by Grace Battiss have also been included (colour coded green). Further monograph references will be included at a later date.

The cards are contained in eight archival, plastic boxes labelled: 1-200; 201-400; 401-600; 601-800; 801-1000; 1001-1200; 1201-1400; 1401-1442.

Reference note:
Each card has an image (usually in black-and-white) on the top half and details thereof on the bottom half. In some cases the original photographic negative also exists and is identified.

The cards follow the pattern used by the University of Pretoria where Murray Schoonraad received his thesis (SA/1783) in January 1974.

The fields provided are:

Name of artist - in this case always Walter Battiss; Name of artwork; Date of artwork; Medium; Size; Signature; Details; Exhibition; Owner; Received from.

The cards have been numbered from 1 to 1442. Previous numbers, entered onto the cards by Schoonraad, have also been shown.
