Additional notes:
Fook Island was discovered - or was it created? - by Walter Battiss. For him and for many of his friends and admirers Fook is a reality, an ideal world, with a philosophy that is opposed to any form of fake. All work by the adventurous doyen of Pretoria artists done in recent years is coloured by Fook. Murray Schoonraad, Professor of Fine arts at the university of Natal who has devoted many years to studying the art and ideas of Walter Battiss, will endeavour to answer that question.
