Most of the works on this exhibition are wood engravings done on South African boxwood from Alexandria in the Cape and Port St Johns. These are on the grain of the wood and the whole process of polishing the surface of the block of engraving and of handprinting the proofs without the use of a press has been done by the artist. Every proof is different making it in effect an artist's original

Some of the works are woodcuts combined with woodengraving done on Yellow Wood recognisable by the broader knifecuts.

There is one pen drawing.

The wood engravings are the first that Walter Battiss has executed for twenty seven years and we are pleased to be the first gallery in the country to show them.
