9x7=63 panels (A1-G9) of this print were hand printed on a Takach litho press from aluminium plates in 3 runs. Run 1 (warm black) was scanned on a flat-bed scanner from 1890s technical mining manuals. Runs 2 & 3 (cool black and red) were drawn by William Kentridge using India ink and red pencils on 63 separate sheets of paper which were individually scanned on a flat-bed scanner and output onto film using an imagesetter. These films were contact-exposed onto aluminium lithographic plates and then printed over the book pages.

Paper used is 145 gsm Zerkall Bütten, supported by a base fabric of 100% cotton (230 thread count). The paper has been pasted onto a cotton fabric using archival carboxy methylcellulose adhesive.
