Notes, adapted: We saw the choice of the right keywords (one per volume) and their interconnection as an important re-requisite for success. From the beginning there were lists with suggested keywords which were constantly changing; new ones were added, old ones discarded. Sub groups were formed: flora and fauna, the three primary colours, the four elements, the title of Borges' story: Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius. We wanted all the letters of the alphabet to be represented. After some years we realised that a substantial part of the Tlon text, distributed over the various volumes, had found its way into the encyclopaedia, and we then decided to gradually incorporate the complete text in the encyclopaedia. Because, apart from a German translation, we had used both the Spanish original as well as an English and French translation, the text of the encyclopaedia is now multi-lingual, many-voiced and not immediately recognisable at first sight (e.g. on the back endpaper of the ZEIT volume).
