In the autumn of 1952, Robert Frank made three identical copies of his first book of photographs. Designed by Werner Zryd, each handmade copy of Black White and Things was roughly square and spiral bound and contained a selection of original photographs. Frank gave one copy to Edward Steichen (now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York) and one to his parents. In 1990 he donated the third copy to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. This book is a facsimilie edition based on the National Gallery's copy. The 34 photographs photographs in this book are printed in tritone and include a number of images that have never before been published. Frank's eye roves from Spain to New York, Paris to Peru in search of somber people and black events, quiet people and peaceful places, and the things people have come in contact with as he once described his quest. This book shows how clearly and distinctly he saw, even at the outset of his career.
