In a career that spans more than 60 years Jane has photographed many of the great writers, actors and statesmen of the modern age.

A student of photography at Guilford College in the 1940s, her first major commission was to photograph Bertrand Russell for the Observer in 1949; and so began a life long attachment to portraiture and The Observer. Working primarily in black and white and using available and natural light Jane's images are at the same time respectful and revealing.

Her most famous sitting perhaps came in 2002 when she was asked to photograph HM The Queen for her 80th birthday.
